Mickey & Judy (The Fringe Festival)

Mickey & Judy

Mickey & Judy
Tarragon Theatre Extra Space
Fringe Festival July 6-17, 2011
Best of the Fringe Uptown, July 20 – August 5, 2011
Created by/Starring: Michael Hughes
Musical Director: Chris Tsujiuchi

When viewing shows at the Fringe Festival, you can never be sure what exactly you will get. Most shows are widely experimental, and run the gamut from comedy, to drama, and some that are just plain bizarre. But Mickey & Judy was the delightfully surprising kind of show, where you emerge with a big smile and a spring in your step—and in this case, a few Broadway show tunes in your head. And obviously other audiences enjoyed it, because this show was one of twelve shows that were selected as “Best of the Fringe,” based on the attendance of the performances at each venue.

Mickey & Judy stars Michael Hughes as himself, telling the story of his life so far, starting with his childhood obsessions with musicals, and the one and only, Judy Garland. In his pseudo-memoir style, the one-man show begins in his early years, when all he wanted to do was dress up, sing songs, and play with female toys, like Barbie (and by the sounds of it, his Barbie was the most fabulous of all the others). Growing up between two sisters, there was a large female influence in the house, and Hughes took to it nicely. His family eventually began calling him Mickey, as in Mickey Rooney, who starred in numerous films with Garland, with the pair earning the moniker “Mickey & Judy” (very clever).

The end has finally arrived for Harry Potter.

In the eighth and final film of the Harry Potter series, the series that is 14 years in the making comes to a satisfying and magical close. Potter fans will be attending this film in droves, and for good reason, as it marks an end to the most profitable (and one could argue popular) series, ever. Fans can rest easy knowing that the final film will likely satiate any lingering curiosity, and ties up most loose ends in the story, without revealing any spoilers.

Song of the Week: Beyonce

July 8, 2011

Beyonce released her new album 4, last week. I’m not a big fan of the lead single, “We Run the World (Girls).” I thought the sample from “Pon De Replay,” was tired and over-used in it.

Her new single was supposed to be “1+1,” but after bad reception for it, it became “Best Thing I Never Had.” The new video is here:

Beyonce, you are a beautiful, sexy woman–but we get it. You’re hot. You do NOT need to parade in your underwear. Your voice speaks for itself, and it is phenomenal.

That being said, the video is nothing special, other than the crazy wedding dress she’s wearing. I did like the “home videos” of B and some jerk at her prom, who treats her like garbage.

After the jump, some songs from 4 that I really enjoyed.

Horrible Bosses

July 8, 2011

Horrible Bosses
Stars: Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis
Director: Seth Gordon
Studio: Warner Bros.

Anyone with a job can likely relate to Horrible Bosses in some manner. Anyone who has, or has had, a job or a coworker that they loathed, will likely find the film’s zany, brazen plot a little too relatable. And while the general idea of the film, with its crudely overdone gags, insults and slurs may seem to be another carbon copy of many, many films, the working pieces of this movie combine to create a surprisingly enjoyable summer popcorn flick.

Featuring a stellar list of superbly-cast actors, the film, directed by Seth Gordon, stars Jason Bateman, Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis, as a group of straight-laced, everyday guys who each hate their respective bosses. Following some superbly horrid days at work, the men, after one too many beers, begin to joke about killing their bosses. All laughs aside, the idea quickly begins to take form, and the group finds themselves traveling down a dangerous path, drifting far from reality.
